Entrepreneurial Kids

At jvAlert Live in Orlando, 12 year old Bradley Johnson put his project idea on the “Hot Seat” to the delight and applause of the entire group.

It’s always a joy to see kids getting an early start on the entrepreneurial mind set.

Over the years, a number of people have encouraged me to host a jvAlert Live for kids.

This time jvAlert Live attendee Lori Grimaldi lit a firecracker under my seat and told me that we really should take action on this idea.

So …

We are considering doing one this summer.

The event would be geared towards kids 10-18 who are interested in being entrepreneurs.  We will teach them how to make money online safely and inspire them to work together to create great success stories.

Lori is suggesting Punta Gorda, FL on the weekend of July 9th, 10th and 11th.

My concern is that it’s about an hour and a half from a major airport.

UPDATE: Lori says that it’s 8 mins to the Punta Gorda Charlotte county airport and it’s 40mins to Fort Myers. (32 miles).

I was considering a location closer to a major airport, possibly with a theme park attraction nearby.

Lori thinks that maybe that would be a distraction.

If it was near a theme park we could do a two day event — not too long for kids attention spans — and then maybe have an optional third day at a fun location.

This would be a kid plus PARENTS event.

I’m considering a $495 price tag per kid with the parents getting in free with the kids ticket.

So the questions are …

1.  Is this a good idea?

2. What about location, format, price, etc.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

All the best,

Ken McArthur

  • Hi Ken,

Love the idea. My 10-year old entrepreneur (who recently turned pro by making his first dollar via YouTube videos & Adsense) would like to attend such an event. We’re in SoCal, so a West coast event would increase the likelihood our our attendance. $495 is a fair price. Let me know what I can do to help.

    Thanks,

    Dan Safkow

  • Hi Ken!

I think this idea is fabulous! We live in NoCal so a West Coast event would be awesome! I would really like to bring my 3 children since they all have businesses (13, 10, 6). I can’t wait to hear more details about it. Have you considered having it at Disney? I bet you could get sponsors for it too! Please let me know as soon as you hammer things out as my community at http://www.RaisingCEOKids.com would be really interested in hearing about it! Let me know how I can assist you.

  • Ken,

As a former “professional Girl Scout”, I can tell you that we have hosted a similar event for a number of years called Camp CEO and it was always very well attended. I think this is a fabulous idea! The girls had a blast and many of them went on to start successful businesses.

I have helped plan several of their events so if you need any assistance let me know. Dearl’s health is stable at the moment so I am able to lend a hand.

  • Thanks so much for your support Melodieann!

    Let’s make this happen.

    All the best,

    Ken

  • Hey Ken,

I really enjoyed the last JVAlert Live! in Orlando. I highly recommend that anyone who wants to be successful in IM or in life run to the next one. The fact that you may do one for kids is a great idea. Bradley was certainly an inspiration.

I’d like to suggest Orlando. The reason is that, for parents, this may be an incentive to make it more like a family vacation… call it multi-tasking. 😉 The weather is decent here, we’ve got Mickey and Spidey… close to the beach, etc. etc. etc. Oh, and did I mention it’d be convenient for those of us who live in Orlando? haha! Seriously, I think Orlando/Kissimmee would be a great choice for obvious reasons. (We’re even getting a Legoland. There goes the neighborhood… 🙂 )

  • I would like to help and participate as that is what http://www.ClubTUKI.com is all about. West coast works beter for me.

  • Hi Ken, It is a Wonderful Idea for the Kids jvAlert Live. I would like to see it in or near Orlando also.
I think the Price is really Reasonable for all of that Teaching. I believe the next Generation’s Career is going to be in Internet Marketing.
Having it near an Amusement Park is also a very good Idea.

  • Thanks Thomas,

It was really great to see you again in Orlando!

  • Hi Kenneth,

This is a great idea, even for kids that are not really sure if they are entrepreneurial or not because I believe that all kids have ideas and want to have more spending money but many lack the self-confidence to try something. You might want to keep this in mind.

I think it would be best close to an international airport to reduce travel time and cost. Near an amusement park or some other leisure activity would be a necessity.

    Thanks for including the kids!

  • Hey Ken,

Great idea!! One problem (or a plus?) with the Punta Gorda Location. It and the surrounding areas (like Fort Myers) are the most economically & financially depressed in the state of Florida (They were HIT HARD with the Real Estate Crash and Stock crash) and the unemployment rate is the highest in the state (15.7%).

It would be a great location though for hotels and beaches with no distractions though.
It would also be a great opportunity for those that could afford it. But the ones that could benefit the most, more than likely, CANNOT.

I live in Orlando and would love to bring my granddaughter to this event. I am not sure that Orlando would be the best venue as hotels and prices have skyrocketed in the last 6 months. I am a member of the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce and keep my fingers on the pulse of event venues very closely.

If you do have the event in the Ft. Myers (Is Now an International Airport) – Punta Gorda area I might suggest lowering the price to $295 per child with an additional $25 per accompanying adult. Your Venue costs will be much cheaper, rates on the Hotels will be much more affordable and it would be a major boost to the local economy (which is much needed right now).

Punta Gorda is also still recovering from that devastating hurricane that practically wiped out the entire city (Rebuilding). Some of those families have just gotten out of those FEMA trailer parks that were set up as temporary housing after the storm.

This event would have a Major Impact on the Lives of those that participate from this area and I believe Lori’s HEART was in the right place when she suggested it.

If you TRULY want to impact and improve the lives of these young people and not just Make-A-Buck than I can provide support and help with finding and securing Best rates for Venue and Hotel with WiFi/Broadband etc…
Please feel free to call me anytime of day @ 407-637-2146 or Fax: 407-641-8811. I’ll even prepare the Press Releases to all the local and regional News, TV and Radio stations if you like.

  • Ken – I come to this discussion late but as Director of Tourism for Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands which includes the charming waterfront city of Punta Gorda, I would be delighted to work with you to bring the Kids’ Entrpreneurial event to Punta Gorda. Punta Gorda has been completely revitalized since the weather malfunction of 2004 and now features a beautiful waterfront state-of-the-art Event & Conference Center which would be the perfect venue for your event. Punta Gorda is a very safe, walkable city with affordable hotels and abundant tourism amenities. Our most recent addition is the Muscle Car City museum featuring over 200 vintage ‘muscle cars’, and an amazing private collection which has gained international attention. Babcock Wilderness Adventures is a 90-minute swamp buggy tour which will enthrall kids of all ages. Fishermen’s Village is a waterfront mall and marina with shops, restaurants , boat rentals and harbor tours. I could go on and on, but suffice to say that we have a beautiful area to offer kids and adults alike and if this event has not yet been scheduled, I hope that you will contact me to discuss the terrific amenities we could offer those attending an event such as this. We also have Edison College and Florida Gulf Coast University which could assist with the program if needed. I look forward to hearing from you about the July event or a subsequent one. Sincerely, Becky Bovell, Director of Tourism. (941) 743-1900 – Come Take Advantage of Our Good Nature!

  • I think the idea suggested by you is fabulous. I will try it.

  • Teaching children is a fabulous job and the study of enterprenuership is very good. I like this post, its very informative for children. Thanks for posting it.

  • I don’t have any kids but I’m a kid at heart, does that count? 😉

  • I think this is a fabulous idea! The girls had a blast and many of them went on to start successful businesses.
