A Day in the Life of an Ego Driven Marketer …

Kenneth A. McArthurHey Folks,

I am living - no doubt at all – an interesting life, but maybe not quite the way that you might envision it.

What do you imagine my life is REALLY like?

No this isn’t the luxurious lifestyle you might imagine.  It’s certainly not problem free, but it IS amazing and I’m DEFINITELY not complaining.

I thought that you might be interested in a little snapshot of my day.

Imagine this …

This morning, I got up worrying.

Have you ever had a day like that?

Let me tell you a dirty little secret from the “Internet Marketing Guru World” — believe me, I know a few “gurus” and it’s pretty universal.

Gurus have money problems just like you do.

I have a lot of millionaire and multi-millionaire friends and it’s more common than rare.

The more money we make, the more we tend to spend.   The more money we make, the more we feel we can risk and sometimes those risks pay off and sometimes they don’t.  Just because someone has a financial success or two doesn’t mean that things are automatically set for life.

Personally, I have no room to complain … you may have MUCH worse problems than I do.

Maybe you are sitting there and don’t have a dime.  Maybe you have no clue where the next meal is coming from.  Maybe you are disabled or mentally challenged.

I don’t pretend to know what you might be going through.  In fact, it amazes me that ANYONE is able to survive the things that life throws our way.

God knows that I’ve been blessed.  I have a family that loves me, grew up without becoming dependent on drugs or alcohol, have a decently functioning brain with no major known damage to it.  I’m in decent health, can walk and talk and the list goes on and on …

I’m not complaining or equating my problems to yours.

But …

I told you that I was going to tell you about my day and today I got up worrying.

On a scale of one to ten, things are a little tight right now financially.

The financial situation comes from a combination of reasons:

  • The traditional August sales slump
  • The fact that I took off a month to travel this summer
  • The fact that I’m working on a TON of long-term projects that aren’t paying me any immediate income.

Are you ever “on top of the world” one second and “bottom of the trash heap” the next?

The good news is that you aren’t alone.

In fact, here is the typical “Successful Internet Marketer” financial pattern:

  • Big Splash
  • Nothing
  • Big Splash
  • Nothing
  • Repeated for ages …

It’s the “Nothings” that kill you.

By the way, “Recurring Income” is the magic word for long-term stability.  It’s not a magic bullet, but it’s a stabilizer.

So I’m thinking that I really could use some cash flow.

Here’s the problem — ok, three problems …

  1. I have no more time
  2. I don’t need any more projects
  3. Most of my projects are long term

So my mind goes over options:

  • An info product
  • A coaching program

I have lots of info products in the works and if I could get them all finished and launched that would make a difference in the bottom-line, but all of my current projects are a month to two months out.

I’d like to have an extra $10,000.00 in the door in the next three weeks.

Coaching programs are interesting animals.

  1. Some coaching programs are high cost, high touch.
  2. Some coaching programs are low cost, low touch.

If you’ve ever thought of doing a coaching program yourself, from the coach’s side of things, it’s a time/dollars equation. Coaching can eat up a TON of time that I don’t have.

Time and health are the most limiting factors that we have in life.

Let’s say that I wanted to invest 20 hours a month of my time in a coaching program for you.

Here’s the first question that should be coming out of my mouth …

What could I offer that would be absolutely the greatest possible value for you?

And the next thing that I should do is ASK the person that I want to give value to — and that’s YOU!

The answer could be obvious … or not.

Maybe ONE customer wants to pay me $10,000.00 for 20 hours of one-on-one very specific consulting.

Maybe they want to fly to Philadelphia and consult non-stop for three solid days on their big project and how to bring in my partners and create a huge splash for a product launch.

Or …

Maybe 500 customers want to pay me $20 for a solid month of teleseminars and carefully developed materials.

Either offering could be good, but bottom-line it’s really up to YOU and what you want.

Because if I don’t give you value, it won’t be worth it to either of us.

If you have ideas about what YOU would like to see in a coaching/mentoring program please let me know.

Bottom-line, you have to solve a real problem to have a big impact.  I want to solve real problems for you, so let me know what you want in a coaching package!

Ok, back to the rest of my day …

I sent out an e-mail to my list asking them if it was an ego trip to try to have a big impact and really make a difference in people’s lives, by challenging them to get to a jvAlert Live Event.

I also said, “I’m asking roughly 11,000 people and my bet is that I’ll get a variety of answers.”

Well, I ended up asking over 40,000 people and I was definitely right about the variety of answers.

One of the first responses came back from Joyce Jackson who I mentioned in the e-mail.  Frank Sousa who “dragged” Joyce Jackson to her first jvAlert Live Event was telling me how she is now being interviewed all over radio and television constantly and having an amazing impact with her “Keeping Kids Safe” program.

Here’s what Joyce had to say:

I still have scratch marks on my neck! So send this to your list…..

“ITS TRUE! I’d be NOWHERE without going to jvAlert Live Events. And it is true, about being on the radio and TV shows…

  • I never could have written the book without Jason Oman whom I met at jvAlert Live.
  • I never could have planned my business without John DiLemme whom I met at jvAlert Live.
  • I never could have gotten on radio or TV without Larry Benet whom I met at jvAlert Live.
  • I never could have gotten my book campaign simplified if it wasn’t for Harris Fellman whom I met at jvAlert Live.

Shall I go on or have I made my point? All of this within 8 months. I’m coming up on my 1 year jvAlert Live Anniversary in Long Beach.

I’d BETTER SEE YOU THERE!

On the other hand …

A couple people really seemed to think that it was an ego trip and a few told me to stop boring them.

Alex Goodall — yes, Alex is coming to jvAlert Live - was kinder than some …

Well, of course it’s some kind of ego trip!

Unless you’re at one of the higher trans-egoic developmental levels of
consciousness and/or can remain stably in non-dual awareness in your
spiritual development…  I guess you’re going to be stuck with ego trips
like the rest of us! (And particularly us baby-boomers who are particularly
prone to grandiose plans to change the world and make a difference….)

But for goodness sake don’t let that slow you down! (I know it won’t.)

:)

Alex Goodall

Some people wrote me that it was just too far to travel to jvAlert Live or that they didn’t have the money or even that they have given up on their dreams.

It brought back memories of some pretty amazing people who have travelled across the world to be at jvAlert Live Events.

People have travelled from Norway – creating a special firesale so that they could pay their way.  People have travelled from Iceland, Poland, Australia, well the list goes on … and many of them did it despite it being an expensive trip and not having a lot of money to work with.

Some have fought health issues to be there.  I got a note from Larry Winebrenner, who was in constant pain as he sat in a wheelchair at the first jvAlert Live in Orlando.  I remember how he brought along his skeptical son and showed his courage and refusal to give into health problems.  Here’s what Larry had to say …

A good healthy self respect is not an ego trip. I know you were writing copy to get attention. But a few shadows hovered around in the background.

Another thing, it’s a poor workman who blames his tools for a poor job.

What I’m driving at here, is that you MUST NOT take the blame when you provide good tools and folks fail by not using them.

Point: A man once looked at a beautiful cabinet my father had constructed [Dad was a first class carpenter and cabinet maker].

“If I just had the right tools, I could build a cabinet like that,” he told Dad.

Fiery German that he was, Dad replied, “If you had the best tools in the world, you couldn’t build a decent shithouse. You’d sit on your dead ass and sigh because you didnt have the right help.”

[Pardon his French which he spoke very well for a German.]

Go ahead. Brag. And don’t worry about the failures who simply sit on their dead [expletitive deleted] instead of doing what you tell them.

End of sermon.

Shalom,

Larry Winebrenner

Larry does what he preaches.

HERE’S THE BOTTOM-LINE …

I have as healthy an ego as anyone else.  I love hearing about the success of my friends and I love meeting you personally at jvAlert Live Events.

Every day I see people struggling and I think that being at a jvAlert Live Event can make a huge difference.

I got a note from a semi-retired pharmacist who is working one day per week. He mentions that he is 74 years old and he and his wife run a translation and interpretation business from home. He grosses about $175,000 per year which nets out to about 60 to 70 thousand per year and he would like to increase his business just a little bit so that the net would be around 70 to 80 thousand per year.

He says that, “That’s about all I need.”

Then he asks, “Do you think I should travel from San Diego to LA for this conference. I don’t.”

I don’t really have an answer for him.

You see, I know that a 74 year old semi-retired pharmacist could come to jvAlert Live and I know that they could pick up an extra $10,000.00 a year just from the information, contacts and real relationships that he would build in just a single weekend.

I’ve seen it happen over and over.

What’s more Long Beach is just down the road from San Diego and he really doesn’t have much of ANYTHING to lose.  If he really thinks that he doesn’t get the value out of jvAlert Live I’d give him his money back.

But …

I what I don’t know is what this gentleman would actually do.

Even if I give someone everything they need for success, I can’t force them to take action.

I can try to drag my friend to jvAlert Live just like Frank Sousa did for Joyce Jackson, but like Larry said [in more colorful language] YOU have to get out there and do it.

I hope that he does come and I hope that he brings his wife.  He’s obviously doing something right now because he’s making a healthy income from home, but hopefully everyone has a “next level” that they are reaching for.

I know that I am and I hope that you are too.

jvAlert Live can help you get to that next level.  I believe that with all of my heart, because my friends are the people that it’s happened to.

It’s only $695 now and you can bring a guest — that’s a great way to split the costs.

THE EARLY-BIRD SPECIAL WILL BE OVER VERY SOON!
(The second it’s over the price will jump back up to the regular price of $1,297.)

    Hey Ken,

Nothing has had more impact on my business then JV Alert or you ;-) .

You allowed me to attend my first JV Alert without paying you in trade for my assistance and help with some minor administrative duties. Let’s just say that I still owe you a few thousand dollars in hypothetical value. Since my first event, I’ve attended quite a few seminars and have gone as far as putting on my own! Without the members of JV Alert and the attendees, my business would still be stalled somewhere 6 figures ago…

Attending JV Alert is something written into my schedule permanently. I will always attend every one and be there to ensure that every attendee gets the most bang for their buck. There is a specific way of handling yourself at an event and I’ve figured out how to make the most impact with the least effort.

So, come see me at JV Alert in Long Beach and I’ll personally make sure that you meet everyone there that could help you expand your business.

    And Ken, you rock!!!

      Hey Ross,

You are DOING it which is an extraordinary thing! My hat is off to you for taking action.

It’s one thing to attend an event, but it’s much more important to take what you gain and actually do something with it.

You are living proof that you can!

      All the best,

      Ken

Ken, I echo what Ross and Joyce said, TIMES TEN.

My brother is getting married that week end, and I’ve already told hiim (in a nice way) that I have more important things to do than to go to his wedding….

There are many factors that have helped me to build my business…. but JVAlert Live is probably the MOST important of them all. I’ve been to every one so far, and plan on continuing to be at every one till you get so tired of me you won’t let me in the door any more.

Hey Ken – Sorry I forgot your original question by the time I got to the bottom of your post :)

Anyway just wanted to say hi and thanks for the 2006 San Diego jvalert. I was a jvalert virgin until then and now I regularly point back to that event and helping with Info Product Blueprint as clearly helping me get my act together.

Since jvalert ’06 I’ve launched a couple products, working on a new one, and formed partnerships with many of the attendees as a result of spinoff activities.

I can’t say it’s all 100% due to jvalert, because of the network effect and indirect things happening. But I know I wouldn’t be so far along in IM without attending jvalert and meeting the quality people you somehow manage to attract – speakers and attendees.

Nice to see Joyce is connected as well – I’m planning to help her out as an affiliate for Keeping Kids Safe and it’s reassuring knowing she’s a “jvalert’er” :)

I’ll see if I can convince my shee-ee-oo to let me come down out of the BC mountains in October.

          Cheers!

            Thanks Frank,

You are a true friend and jvAlert Live wouldn’t be the same without you.

What a gift you are to everyone you know.

              Hey Peter,

              Great to hear from you!

What a joy it is to hear about your success! Definitely plan on getting your behind down from the mountains.

Hope to see you again soon!

              All the best,

                Hi, Ken!

Your note made me look back through the videos & interviews Teri & I did at JVAlert events over the last couple of years, including Philly & Orlando. It’s just about the only time ‘our gang’ get together in the real world – we’re all too busy the rest of the time to meet outside of cyberspace.

We were all just getting going – ourselves, Mike Steup, Jeff Dedrick, Louis Burleson, Liz Tomey, Jamie Bing, Xavier Nelson, Stuart Halpryn, Barry Richardson, Ross Goldberg, Bill & Gina Gaudio-Graves, Joel Osborne, Jason James, Costa Dedes – and pretty much everybody in the biz knows where each of us is today. And the friendships cemented at JVAlert events continues amongst us all, and will forever be renewed at your events.

Without exception, each of us is more successful and enjoys the biz more for having been to JVAlert – so a big thank you from us individually & collectively. And thanks, too, for your friendship and concern along the way. You truly do walk the walk, and have made a major contribution both to the biz and those of us in it.

While time and business constraints will prevent Teri & I from attending this fall, you can bet we’ll be back at your JVAlert Orlando and Philly events in ’08!

                Keep fighting the good fight,

                Doug & Teri Champigny.

I’ve been thinking about you and your amazing success. I sent a couple emails but didn’t get an answer, so maybe I have old information.

Send me some updated contact info if you would. We should definitely talk.

Thanks for the kind words, they mean a lot.

                    Ken,

My life is in a total state of chaos now that I have become a member of the jvAlert family!

I go to my job (this is the last year for that puppy) plotting my escape by creating the next big JV and drive home with the same splans going through my head.

Sure I had ideas before attending my first jvAlert. I used to write ebooks. But then the only only person who bought one was me to test the payment buttons…

Now that I have experienced the jvAlert family, and met the people who have now become JV partners and (some have become some of my best) friends, I am now so busy creating products, selling other peoples’ products and preparing for the day when I can wear mistletoe on my rear belt loop and go to work for the last day!

If it weren’t for the people who believed in me long before I started believing in myself, I would still be testing my Paypal button and wondering why my ebook is not selling. Ken, you are the head of that fan club, because you see things in me before I ever see it. When I see you in Long Beach, I plan to have some big news about Extreme Product Explosion, too, because I have gotten some amazing offers for interviews (all from people that I met at one jvAlert or another) so that the members area will be so chock full of great content, that people will feel guilty that they are only paying what they are paying…

So if anyone is sitting on the fence about attending:

First – what the heck are you doing sitting on a fence? Most fences are not really very comfortable, the seats at Ken’s events are very comfortable. Some of the best cushiony chairs that hotels can get…

Second – are you in business or in a hobby? Trust me when I say that those who invest some money in their business get more than they invest back out of it. If you are in a hobby, the money you spend is only an expense.

Third – If you are on Ken’s list, you know how big the guy’s heart is. People love Ken. That is why some of the best speakers from around the world volunteer to speak at Ken’s events. They know that any friend of Ken’s will be more receptive to the information that they are presenting. But you also need to know that Ken has so many friends, that he is going to run out of seats, most likely before the end of the early bird special!

Lastly – If you don’t attend, you won’t get to meet me. And I just bought a new suit (at Walmart, I am not a high roller yet, but just you wait!) and I want to get my picture taken with as many of Ken’s friends as I can. Shoot, I just got myself another 2GB memory card for my camera, so that I can fit all of the pictures.

                    So get with the program…lol.

You need a little chaos in your life? Grab it with both hands and harness it!

                    Thank you Ken, for everything.

                    Have an amazing day!

                        • Geez Ken – this is a HUGE blog post (I came back twice to finish it) and it has 4 separate topics.
                          1. Your financial bind
                          2. Whether you’re egotistical or not
                          3. Your day

All worthy topics indeed, but you’re shooting 1 arrow at 5 targets. :D

I’ll respond to a couple of your issues:

1 financial flux – I am working on building residual income to bring a baseline of income in monthly. It is a journey for sure, and I’m not “there” yet.

                          2. Ego or not – Anytime a person knows he’s destined to do great things, some will perceive him as egomaniacal. But I also notice that as anyone moves to a higher level of success and income, you attract the right people more and more, and tho wrong people shoot arrows at you. You don’t need the nay-sayers anyway!
