Hey Folks,
You are going to find this bit of data interesting.
Here are my top-ten click producing headlines for my newsletter list this month.
By the way, if you aren’t on the email notification list, click here to get on it. It will help you avoid missing the good stuff.
I’ve linked the subject lines to the posts that the emails were promoting, but it’s pretty much the subject line that gets you to open the email and here are the ten subject lines that pulled the most clicks last month.
1. {!firstname}, thanks to Frank Sousa, you get …
2. {!firstname}, I don’t know how to say this …
3. Ouch, That one hurt {!firstname}!
4. {!firstname}, can I put your picture on my blog?
5. {!firstname}, people are fighting me on this one …
6. {!firstname}, Open Rates, Controversy and Spelling
7. {!firstname}, it’s an extreme kind of day …
8. {!firstname}, Lots of questions from yesterday …
9. {!firstname}, The Apprentice without the Backstabbing
10. {!firstname}, Wow, what a response to my last blog post …
Interestingly enough I DIDN’T use the same titles on the blog and there is a reason why.
Have you ever done a Google search on your own name? Click here to get an idea of what I see when I do a search on mine.
Hmmm it seems that the Rich Jerk is running a Google Adwords Campaign on MY name.
Gurus Suck
Don’t buy anything from
Ken McArthur until you read this.
Nice to be considered a guru …. I guess.
Why would he do that? Well it seems that there must be some people searching for my name and they are probably related somehow to Internet marketing, so the Rich Jerk, knows targeted traffic when he sees it.
Heaven knows that I’m not the only person in my industry that people might be searching for.
Imagine the number of people that search on names like Mike Filsaime, Rich Schefren, Brad Fallon or a hundred other top-level Internet marketers.
If you happen to be in the Internet marketing field people that are looking for those names are people that might potentially be your future customers.
But, here’s another interesting fact.
I’m not the only guy searching on his own name.
Lots of top-level people search on their own names so that they can see what is being said about them and their products in the public marketplace.
So when I wrote about Ben Mack, I quickly got an email from Ben thanking me for my post and he included in the email an email that HE got from Google Alerts that actually told him about the post.
If you don’t know about Google Alerts click here.
In short you can use them for keeping current on a competitor or industry, getting the latest on a celebrity or event, monitoring a developing news story, or even keeping tabs on your favorite sports teams.
Each time Google finds something on your search term, they send you an Alert to let you know what’s new.
You should be doing this on your own name and the names of other people that you are interested in.
So Back to subject lines and post titles.
There is no search engine value in an email subject line — unless you are posting it online somewhere.
So the subject line has one purpose only …. to get you to stop, open the e-mail and read the email.
But …
Title lines in blogs have a couple of purposes.
First we want to make people read, just like in an email subject line.
But, secondly we want people to find our title lines in the search engines and click on them to read more.
Take a look at the above e-mail subject lines and then the posts that they are promoting.
Then post a comment and let me know what you think about the top-ten click producers AND the titles for the posts.
More soon!
All the best,
Kenneth A. McArthur

P.S. I was poking around inside of Sterling Valentine’s latest project today.
I’ve seen it, I like it and it’s going to be a great ride. Watch for another big splash from Sterling in the next day or two.

Once again, some great information, information people can really use. Thank you! I find it so refreshing there are still “some” marketers that provide more than just a sales pitch. Latley it seems all I get in my mailbox is constant buy, buy buy. There are a few that provide no information, just pushing you to get their latest big ticket item. I’ve been taking myself off a few lists lately.
As for the rich jerk, it’s really sad some marketing has been reduced to abuse and name calling. People won’t take it for long, they never do. If you take care of your custmers and subscribers, the jerk’s are not even a concern.
ken, you have one of the best blogs. your blog has clear, and useful information. i have been reading your blog and using the information you provide. i am new to internet marketing. i want to get the attention of my custoemrs. then i want to build a relationship with them. i don’t want to bombard them with pitches 24/7. i want to provide them with the info they need so they can make a decision as to whether or not my products will be a of value to them. I want to have happy customers.
