How I Know Michel Fortin Read My Blog

Kenneth A. McArthurHi Folks,

I’m a fan of world class copywriter Michel Fortin, but just yesterday I found out that he says that he is a fan of ME.

I find that pretty amazing that my unofficial fan club includes someone like Michel Fortin, but even more interesting is how I found out.

You see I’ve never met Michel Fortin — although I’d love to do that some day.  I’ve never talked to him on the phone and I don’t think that I’ve ever e-mailed him.

So Michel never told me, but I have a free “secret tool” that not only told me not only that Michael read my blog, but that he listed himself as a fan of mine.

I’ll tell you about the free tool in just a second, but first I want to let you know about a shift in my strategy for staying in touch with my readers, clients and friends.

As all of you know e-mail delivery is getting much tougher.  I’m even finding it hard to get e-mails through to my mother, so something has to be done.

Part of what I have been doing lately is driving traffic to this blog — as opposed to directly mailing my full message to you.

If you signup for my personal newsletter, you will get short messages that update you about things that are going on, but the main purpose of the emails is just to let you know that something new has been posted here.

There are a lot of reasons behind the shift from a traditional e-mail newsletter to sending people to this blog, but one of them is the fact that even if you miss a post, the next time that you go to the blog it will be there waiting for you.

That means that messages aren’t a “one-time shot” and they have a longer life.

There are also opportunities for organic search engine traffic here — And it’s TARGETED organic search engine traffic.

The secret tool that I mentioned before also told me that I was getting organic Google traffic for search terms like Seth Godin, StomperNet, Simpleology and Mark Joyner.  I wouldn’t be getting that traffic with an e-mail newsletter.

So, it’s not a coincidence that the name Michael Fortin is in the title of this post.  Who knows, in a few days if you search on Google for Michel Fortin, this post may come up.

This new strategy is working!

In fact the Alexa ranking for this blog is going through the roof.  Yesterday we broke into the top 30,000 sites according to Alexa and that’s just in the 2 months that this blog has been on this domain.

By the way, if you don’t have the Alexa toolbar yet, click here and download it.  It’s a great resource for finding out a ton of information about the sites that you visit — and potential joint venture partners.

Lot’s of new tools for building blog traffic.

I’m going to tell you a way that you can skyrocket Alexa rankings soon, but there are LOTS of specialized tools and sites that allow blog content to end up all over the place.

And …  People have lots of options for being notified when you post new content.

Just take a look at some of the things in the right-hand column of this site. See where it says, “Bookmark this on …”

You can bookmark this site and add it to your My Yahoo or TONS of other services.

That doesn’t even mention the wonders of adding “Trackbacks” or other ways to tie your blog into the huge network of traffic that is out there waiting to be tapped.

My advice?

  1. If you don’t have a blog get one.
  2. If you do have a blog, try borrowing some traffic from mine.

How do you borrow my traffic?

  • Post comments on this blog
  • Post entries about Ken McArthur on your blog
  • Link to this blog
  • Do trackbacks to posts that interest you on this blog
  • Get the RSS feed to this blog and incorporate that feed into your own blog or website

Well there’s more, but you get the idea.

Ok, now the free “secret tool” that told me that Michael Fortin read my blog and was a fan.

MyBlogLog.com is a site that actually lets you discover who visits your favorite sites — including your own.

It not only gives you detailed stats on who visited, where they came from and where they went to.  It lets you know about Google search terms that got people to your site and even lets you build a community of people from the people that read your blog.

The basic version doesn’t cost a thing so I started using it for tracking and stats.  All that I had to do was add a simple line of code to my site and MyBlogLog.com handled the rest.  Nice reports and lots of information that I can use.

They have a number of interesting “widgets” that you can add to your blog, but that’s all optional and I didn’t use any of them to start out.

So, today I was taking a quick look at my MyBlogLog.com page and noticed that they had placed little icons with pictures of people that had visited my site on the report page.

One of those pictures was Michael Fortin.  Most likely Michael found my blog because I visited HIS blog recently.

Now it turns out that Michael used one of those MyBlogLog.com ”widgets” to show the pictures of people that visited his blog.  My picture popped up to the top and guess what …

Michel Fortin Reads His Own Blog!

I’m guessing that he clicked on the picture of ME on his blog (as lots of other people could do too — hint, hint).

That took him to my MyBlogLog.com page and he was nice enough to add himself and classify himself as one of my “fans”.

By the way, there are lots of other ways to find out who is in the MyBlogLog.com and add them to your contacts.  I just added Shawn Casey that way today.

So today, I added the widget.

Here’s a final suggestion for today on how to steal my traffic.

Get your own MyBlogLog.com page and then visit this blog.

YOUR picture will show up on my blog and most likely at the very least “I” will be inclined to click on it and who knows maybe Michel Fortin will click on yours too.

All the best,

Ken – thanks for sharing a simple and easy to adapt method to generate extra traffic and a way to understand where the traffic is coming from.

I have added your feed to my feedreader, and I encourage others to do the same. Much easier than an email program for getting the info you want from the Blogs that are good – like this one.

      Cheers
      Matt
