Hey Folks,

Randy Gilbert sent me a copy of Jeffrey A. Landers new book, “The Home Office from Hell Cure” in which Jeffrey asks the question, “Are you a Growth Maven or a Lifestyle Guru?” There’s a nice little quiz in the book that you can take to tell which one you are.

Growth mavens are ambitious and they don’t think small. Lifestyle Gurus want to do it their own way and think that the quality of their lifestyle is important.

The truth is, I’m split right up the middle.

I’ve watched many of my marketing friends move into the growth maven mode. They now have full-time staffs of ten or more people.

I also have mentors that have taken their companies public for millions.

Sooner or later the question becomes, “What’s your exit strategy?” and the exit strategy for Lifestyle Gurus is typically work until you die, while the exit strategy for Growth Mavens is “work like crazy until you can get out.”

I love the work I do!

I’m not so focused on building organizations as I am building impact. Not so focused on millions of dollars as I am with making a difference.

That said, I’m in growth mode and that means scrambling.

Success is a tricky thing!

For one thing, if you are not careful, it can knock out that “Lifestyle” element really quickly. Suddenly, you find yourself more successful and less fulfilled.

This week I moved from a person that likes to write to a published author.

Career Press shipped me 25 copies of my new book and I took one out of the box and held it in my hand for the first time.

The first thing that struck me was that it looked great. I’d seen the cover art, but believe me, it looks better on the book. My first thought was, “Wow! This is a real book!”

The second thing that I noticed was that it was heavy! This book is packed with details. No light weight play book here!

I read the comments on the back of the book and the book seemed undeniably credible.

Then I started reading Dave Lakhani’s foreword to the book and he grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let go.

Now understand, that when I wrote this book, I read it over and over and over again. I wrote and rewrote and refined and changed and after a while it seemed like it all melted together. I wasn’t too sure what I’d written by the end of the editing process!

But I turned that manuscript in back in December and this week it was all new. Before this week it was all manuscript and stories and ideas and then suddenly it was a finished, polished, published book that drew me in as if I’d never read it before.

I’d forgotten how many stories I shared, how many ideas and techniques I crammed into 256 pages and what a fresh way of looking at things this book was.

And there is a good chance that YOU are in this book too!

Hey Folks,

Malcolm Gladwell, author of Tipping Point and Blink and other amazing works is such an detailed, fact-filled icon that you KNOW the guy is THE authority on how ideas move and spread, but his real genius is that he’s a master story teller.

Now, Malcolm has admitted telling a few tall tales in his time, notably several years ago at “The Moth” , which is a storytelling organization that poet and novelist George Dawes Green, started in New York to capture the feeling of a small circle of friends gathering to spin spellbinding tales.

Malcolm told the audience a tale of his first job at the Washington Post, where he was assigned to the “Business Desk”

The tale that he chose to spin that night involved a contest to plant certain key phrases into news stories. (Note the link is to the unedited version, Malcolm uses a couple choice words at the beginning of his tale, but the story itself is G rated.)

The contest was between Malcolm and a fellow writer and the goal was to insert the phrase “Raises new and troubling questions” into the most possible news stories.

Now Malcolm was telling a tall tale, and tall tales are NOT supposed to be true. Malcolm says to take his story with a huge grain of salt, but stories are certainly a way that gets ideas to spread.

Stories engage us and we really listen to them.

In fact, we listen MORE CLOSELY to stories when we don’t know the whole story!

And we listen more when people whisper than when they shout.

Malcolm turned up some pretty interesting ways to insert the phrase, “Raises new and troubling questions” into the most possible news stories and now our Impact Launch Team, is doing the same sort of thing with”Zingwhacker Ideas.” Only a couple of weeks ago there where ZERO search results on the term “zingwhacker” and now there are hundreds.

Why would people be talking about something when they don’t even know what it means?

Last night, John Kremer, the author of a number of books on publishing and marketing, including 1001 Ways to Market Your Books: For Authors and Publishers (6th Edition), predicted that “zingwhacker ideas” would be mentioned on the Tonight Show by Jay Leno before this campaign was done.

People love to imagine and speculate and gossip.

I hadn’t run across Malcolm’s tall tale when I wrote my new book, Impact: How to Get Noticed, Motivate Millions and Make a Difference in a Noisy World or when I started my Zingwhacker whisper campaign, but I could definitely use Malcolm’s creative mind at work spreading the speculation and the concept of Zingwhacker ideas. Imagine the ideas Malcolm could come up with!

Or better yet … How many can YOU come up with!

Why not try latching on to EXISTING Buzz?

The readers of this blog and the the members of TheImpactFactor, jvAlert and jvAlertLive are the best of the best. If you want to really spread the word, then you need to take things to the next level.

One of the things that I teach in Impact: How to Get Noticed, Motivate Millions and Make a Difference in a Noisy World is how to identify existing networks and key resources within those networks. So if someone or something already has the attention of your audience all you need to do is to link the existing buzz to whatever you are doing.

Here’s how it might work on a very BASIC level.

One of the stories in Impact: How to Get Noticed, Motivate Millions and Make a Difference in a Noisy World is the story of Juan Mann and the “Free Hugs Campaign” which gained a great deal of attention through the creation of a YouTube Video which has so far had over 25,720,018 views as of the writing of this post.

In a sense, I am latching onto the network of people who are interested in this video and the “Free Hugs Campaign” by writing about it, but I can also link directly into that existing community by commenting on the video and referencing my book. Even more interesting is the fact that there are MULTIPLE videos that have hundreds of thousands of views that are only RELATED to the original YouTube video.

That means that by creating a video that references both the original and Impact: How to Get Noticed, Motivate Millions and Make a Difference in a Noisy World or Zingwhacker ideas, that I can tag into the traffic and community ALREADY existing and interested in making a difference and get them to notice my ideas, products and services.

How creative can YOU be?

I’d love to see what you’ve come up with, so be sure to let me know and I’ll share it with the group. This will be a very interesting and creative experiment. Imagine that you are Malcolm Gladwell — just missing the hairdo!

Hey Folks,

So yesterday, I’m minding my own business when I get a Facebook Friend Request from John Reese.

I’ve known John for a while now. He’s been very kind to drop by jvAlert Live a couple of years when we held it in Orlando, and we’ve stayed in touch over the years, so there wasn’t anything so very strange about John asking me to be a friend via my Facebook Profile except for one thing.

John Reese only had 20 friends.

I had to look at that one twice.

Now before you get to feeling too sorry for John, I have to tell you I’m pretty sure that tens of thousands of people would LIKE to be John Reese’s friend, so why was John Reese sitting there with only 20 people on his friends list?

Okay, so put yourself in my shoes, what would you LIKE to think at this point?

Wow! John Reese picked ME in the first 20 people that he wanted to ask to be friends on Facebook.

So I immediately accepted John’s friend request, thanked him and told him that he made my day.

Minutes later, I get a personal Facebook message back from John …

“Sure thing, Ken! That’s what ‘friends’ do. :-)”

I’m going to tell you, the “REST OF THE STORY” in a minute, but …

First let me tell you that Facebook is becoming my secret weapon lately.

I’ve been quietly using Facebook to interest “targeted” people in jvAlert Live, because my Facebook Profile is a two way street and an amazing research tool.

Just imagine this …

You have an amazing database of your potential customers. Not only have they given you their name and e-mail, but they have given you all of their interests, their thoughts, their desires, their contacts, their crucial friends names and THEIR contact information.

Stop and think about this!

How much would you pay someone for a database like this? And it doesn’t cost you a cent!

What’s more this is just one way that you can begin to attract a crowd of people who are interested in getting to know about you and everything that you have to offer.

And there’s an extra benefit, because …

You may be wondering why I didn’t reply to your last e-mail

Literally thousands of people are wondering right now why I didn’t respond to their last e-mail and here’s the really rotten part …

I DID!

I respond to THOUSANDS of e-mail personally. In fact, I probably spend WAY too much time doing it because I send out literally hundreds of personal responses to e-mails every day.

But the chances are very high that you never saw my response.

In fact, if your e-mail comes from hotmail.com, comcast.net, msn.com, yahoo.com or anyone of hundreds of other companies that block incoming mails on an arbitary basis, the chances are almost ZERO that you got my response.

At this point I have to maintain gmail accounts, yahoo accounts, aol accounts. All just so I can get through to people who need to get an email from me.

And even if your e-mail provider DOES let my reply through … YOU STILL PROBABLY WON’T GET IT!

With thousands of e-mail pouring into your mailbox every day, your spam filters will block your mail and you won’t even know it.

So what can we do about that?

Well you can try white listing emails from jvAlert.com, TheImpactFactor.com and other domains that I operate. At the end of this posting I’ll give you a complete list of all the HOOPS you have to jump through to white list just ONE of those domains!

How To Whitelist Ken McArthur’s Marketing Thoughts in your Spam Filter

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days,
it’s unfortunate that legitimate email publications are not being
seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications.  There
is much fear today that the email publishing / marketing industry
is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate
email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of
unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some
legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests
for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future
filtering.  However, due to the size of our list, it’s nearly impossible
for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always
anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that our publication
delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you
take just a minute or two to add our publication to your “safe” or permitted
email sender list.  This usually involves simply adding our sending address
(From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of priviledged senders.
This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication.

Please refer to the following whitelisting instructions you can use to
whitelist Ken McArthur’s Marketing Thoughts, depending on the filtering
solution you use:

AOL

Go to keyword:  Mail Controls.
Select the screen name we’re sending your Ken McArthur’s Marketing
Thoughts to.
Click Customize Mail Controls For This Screen Name. 

Version 9.0:

Open your latest Ken McArthur’s Marketing Thoughts e-mail.
Click the Add Address button (on the right) to add to your “People I Know” list.

will add us to your “People I Know” list automatically. To do this:

Click the Reply button (it’s in the top right corner).
A new email window opens with the wrong address in the “Send To” box.
Replace the address in the Send To box with: ken@jvAlert.com
Click Send Now (in the top right corner).
Even if the e-mail you send doesn’t get through to us, the act of sending it does
the job of putting us into your “People I Know” list.

CleanMyMailbox:

Click on Address Book (it’s over on the left, below your Folders).
When your Address Book opens, click the Add button.
On the Add Contact screen, find the Internet Information box.
Enter ken@jvAlert.com into the top Email box.
Click Save. 

Hotmail:

Click the Options link, on the main menu tabs, then Safe List.
Type: ken@jvAlert.com in your Safe List.
If you see a message that should not be in your Junk Mail folder, click
‘This is not Junk Mail’ to avoid having e-mail from the same source sent to
the Junk Mail folder in the future. 

Mailblocks:

Click the Addresses tab.
Click New.
Type: ken@jvAlert.com
Make sure ‘Accept Mail From This Address’ is selected under Receiving Options.
Uncheck ‘Display in People Picker’ under Other options.
Click Submit.
Click OK. 

MailShield:

Click Friends from the toolbar.
Click Add.
Type: ken@jvAlert.com
Click OK. 

MailWasher:

Click Tools, then Blacklist & Friends.
Click Add… on the right, the Friends list side.
Make sure Plain email address is selected.
Type: ken@jvAlert.com 
Click OK.
Click OK.

McAfee Spamkiller:

Click Friends from the sidebar.
Click Add.
Type: ken@jvAlert.com
Click OK. 

MSN:

Click on Settings: E-mail | Junk e-mail (it’s at the bottom left of the screen,
just above Calendar)
On the E-mail settings screen, click Junk E-Mail Guard.
Select Safe List.
In the space provided under “Add people to the safe list”, enter ken@jvAlert.com.
Click Add. 

oddpost:

Check your ‘Probably Spam’ folder.
If you see that Ken McArthur’s Marketing Thoughts was incorrectly filtered out,
select it, and click the ‘Move to Inbox and Mark as Not Spam’ button.

Outlook 2003:

Add ken@jvAlert.com to your Safe List.
Add ken@jvAlert.com to your Personal Contacts in your Outlook Address Book.
Open any desired e-mail, then select Mark as Not Junk.

Log into your SpamCop account.
Click on the Options icon in the toolbar.
Under Mail Management (in the middle), click SpamCop Tools.
Select Manage your personal whitelist.
Near the bottom, where it reads “Click here to add to your whitelist”,
click on Click here.
Enter ken@jvAlert.com in the first empty slot.
Click Submit. 

Spameater Pro:

Click Filters from the sidebar.
Click the Approved Senders tab.
Click Add Filter.
Type: ken@jvAlert.com under Address.
Choose ‘Full Email Address’ under Address Type.
Select Email Domain.
Click OK. 

Spam Inspector:

Select Spam Inspector, then ‘Manage Friends List’
from either the Spam Inspector toolbar or from the Outlook menu.

Spam Interceptor:

Follow the Trusted link under > Authentication Lists.  Enter the email

SpamPal:

Click on the SpamPal system tray icon with the right mouse button.
Click ‘Add to Whitelist’ from the menu.

Spam Sleuth:

Select File, then Configure.
Go to the Friends category.
Make sure Active is checked.
Type: ken@jvAlert.com on a line by itself in the entry field.
Click OK. 

Verizon:

Go to your Verizon Inbox.
Click Options.
Select the Block Senders tab (near the top of the screen).
On the Block Senders screen, you’ll see both a “Block Sender List” and
a “Safe List”. In the space where it says “Enter e-mail address or sub
domain to always accept even if the domain is blocked”,
enter ken@jvAlert.com.

Yahoo! Mail

Open your Yahoo! mailbox.
Click Mail Options.
Click Filters.
Click Add Filter.
In the top row, labeled ‘From header:’ make sure Contains is selected
in the pull-down menu.
Click in the text box next to that pull-down menu, then enter the
address: ken@jvAlert.com
At the bottom, where it says “Move the Message To:” select Inbox
from the pull-down menu.
Click the Add Filter button again. 

If Ken McArthur’s Marketing Thoughts has been filtered to your
“bulk” folder, simply pen the message and click on the “This is not
Spam” link next to the “From” field. 

Other providers:

Just back from a quick trip to Washington D.C. and Annapolis, MD and gearing up for a VERY busy week!
