Dear Ken,

I just HAD to write you this.

I know that you get many emails and letters thanking you for your hard work, your caring, your events, and so on.  But I wanted to make sure that I express myself to you, to encourage you to continue on the path you are walking.

Ken, I can’t tell you HOW EXCITED I am about your Joint Venture mentorship program!  Even though I have only been officially in this for a week now, it is mind-boggling how many doors it has already opened up.  I swear, I think that this is the best deal on the internet… I really mean that.  I feel like I’ve been enrolled in some prestigious business university on steroids.  You and your team have somehow managed to take many years of business and life experience (and all the pains and rewards encountered along the way), roll it all up into a big ball, and squeeze out its nectar for your students to benefit from.  I can’t wait to see what’s in store for me around the corner now!

As you may remember, I recently lost my very stable job of 11 years.  When that happened, I didn’t know what I was going to do.  I had a very high, pre-September-11 salary.  Then, literally in one fifteen minute meeting, POOF!  My secure job was suddenly gone!  In fact, once my employer told me I was laid off, I was escorted off the premises, as if I was some sort of criminal.  Why, they didn’t even let me return to my office to pack my things… I was only allowed to take home my lunch.  They actually went through the expense of shipping me my personal items later.  Let me tell you, it was humiliating as people gathered around to wish me good bye while being escorted and watched like a hawk for “any false moves”.

As I drove home, I wondered what I was going to do now.  You see, we’ve had it very rough the last couple of years.  I had been diagnosed as having moderately severe clinical depression, partly because of the stress in my life.  In addition to the depression, I had a very serious sleeping disorder that, in powerful sudden waves, interferes with my ability to live a normal life and my ability to perform at peak level at my former place of employment.  Financially, it has been the worst time of our life.  We had some very significant debt that we were struggling to overcome.  All of my business ideas that I wanted to set in place to save us just all seemed to sit there and do nothing.  Health-wise, it’s been a wreck as well.  My wife has health problems that have consumed what little money we and our creditors had left.  To make matters worse, my entire family was also doing bad financially and, as the firstborn, I had resolved to pull myself out of this mess and then to pull my family out as well.  But now, what was I going to do?  It truly seemed like my world was darkening around me.  It’s quite a sickening feeling to lose your job when you’ve already lost so much.  And my biggest concern was, How would my very exhausted wife do through this new phase in our life together?

Fortunately for me, I had recently learned about your new IMPACT event through my friend, Odinn Sorensen.  And the event couldn’t have come at a perfect time.  Two weeks after being laid off, I got the reinforcement of a lifetime by attending IMPACT.

All I can say is, that one event was life changing for me.  When I got laid off, I tried to have a very positive attitude.  I tried to look at this as an opportunity, after 11 years of working for “The Man”, to finally spread my wings and fly.  But in the back of my mind was a little guy yelling at me, “How the heck are you gonna do that?!!!”  The IMPACT event shut that little guy up.  Suddenly, I had hope again that my wife and I could actually survive the Great Depression of Tom Grow. ;-)

But IMPACT was just the beginning.

At the event, you offered to all of us the opportunity to join your Joint Venture mentorship program.  I was absolutely blown away at the opportunity, and more than that, the incredible price that you were offering it at.  But even with the incredibly generous IMPACT pricing discount special, I really didn’t think that I could afford it, given my present circumstances.  Besides, there’d be no way of convincing my wife to spend money on something like this… she had kindly and patiently allowed me to take many risks (which I failed in just about all of them) in hopes that one venture would succeed… but now, any risk would seem so much more expensive.

Nonetheless, I began my “marketing campaign” ;-) on my wife.  Every day of the event, I told her how exciting IMPACT was.  And the motivation wasn’t just promotional in nature.  I was really speaking out of genuine excitement.  When I told her about your program, she, as expected, cringed.  She knew what was coming and it didn’t seem like she would support me this time.  But near the end, I sat her down.  I said, “Look.  All my life, I’ve tried over and over again to do something on my own for us.  And every time, I failed.  Why?  Because I didn’t know what I was doing and I was afraid of the unknown.  What have I told you all along?  What was the one thing that I said that I felt was the missing ingredient?  I’ve always said, ‘if only someone could just guide me and motivate me and take me by the hand and move me along.”  She listened… she’s my best friend and she always listens.  I continued, “This is my chance now, to have a dream team… real business people with real connections and real experience.  The price I’d be paying is crazy cheap and it will definitely pay for itself.  I promise you that I will use this to the fullest.  I really believe that this is what I’ve been looking for.  This will help save us.”  And after a few similar discussions and reassurance that I would follow through and focus (one of the primary lessons I learned at IMPACT) and not follow my normal ADD ways, she agreed.

I haven’t looked back since.

I’m so glad I didn’t get this for free.  Paying out of my almost empty pocket is one of the most empowering things I’ve ever done.  By doing this, I’m taking control.  I’m giving something up for it, instead of getting a hand out.  I’m learning to fish, instead of being given a fish.

Ken, what you’re offering is paramount.  I don’t think you, or the rest of the world, fully realize how big a deal your program is.  The thought of being able to work with you alone is easily worth much more than the full price you charge.  You are an ICON in the internet marketing industry and, as I learned at IMPACT by meeting you, are so much more than just that.  Your heart is behind your mission to impact as many people as possible in this world.  The weight that you pull in the industry is enormous.  Your contacts are invaluable.  And to think that I now have the opportunity to speak with you twice a week or more… WOW!  I cannot believe that I have such an opportunity!  If I had known about such a program a long time ago, many of my current problems could have been avoided, including ALL of my financial issues.  I wish I had known you back then.  But it’s amazing that I have this opportunity now.

Seriously, my head is swimming regarding the opportunity and value of your mentoring program versus the actual cost.  I mean, you have assembled a DREAM TEAM of promotions and marketing, business, authorship, and knowledge.  The program is worth well more than the cost, for each individual on your team ALONE… but together?!!!  All I can say is that you could easily charge TEN TIMES the amount your are charging and I would have no hesitation in putting the money down for it if I can beg, borrow, or steal to join.  Honest, my words are not just gratuitous flatteries.  I’d pay so much just for the opportunity to work with people like business genius Mark Boersma, who actually created and sold a 500 billion (with a B) dollar company, and Joyce Jackson, an international best seller.  Never in my life did I imagine that I could work closely with people of that calibre, let alone simply have the opportunity to meet someone like that at a book signing.

I can’t believe the opportunities in front of me now.  Not just one small door of opportunity… but many huge garage doors of possibilities for me, all opening at once!  Talk about being a kid in a candy store!

With all of the awesome help, I’m starting, in addition to my joint ventures through the program, a website.  It is http://www.thewebwhisperer.com, where I will be sharing with people my skills as a seasoned web developer and as a, soon to be, successful online business person.  I hope that, through the site, I can make some impact on people’s lives, especially those who are in financially desperate times.  That will be one of my hopefully many future gifts to society.  I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, but now, with the help and motivation of you and your staff, I am actually making it a reality.

It’s incredible to me that, after only a week in your program, how much time and personal direction I’ve had from your staff.  I’m literally shaking my head right now in amazement as I think about my conversations with Joyce and Mark already.  I can’t believe how many Joint Venture opportunities I’ve already had offered to me… even ones where I can work with Joyce and Mark personally!  A month ago… no, a week ago… I had never imagined myself in this situation.  Yet here I am!  I am now the busiest unemployed person in America and I’m enjoying every minute of it!  In fact, I have two possible very dream job offers on the table right now… one for a prestigious media company and the other for a management position for a HUGE entertainment company which is run by a mouse. ;-) Yet, guess what… I don’t know if I’ll take either job.  Before your program, I would have taken either offer in a heartbeat, because they are pretty much dream jobs in my line of work.  But now that I’m in your program, I don’t know… because I want to spend all my time working for my and my family’s future, rather than working for a paycheck.  If I do take one of the jobs, I don’t plan to be there very long.  The opportunities you’ve offered me through your program are far better.  Why, I realistically see my old (and quite large) salary being replaced within the next couple months (I’m being conservative!), and I have the goal of replacing my wife’s salary as well in another couple months.  I can’t believe how realistic this all is.  I honestly feel that I will be totally self-sufficient in 4 months tops and 100% debt free (six figure debt) within 9 months. There’s a light at the end of my tunnel, and for once, it’s not a train!

In this economy, it’s hard to reach into one’s pocket and pull out some money for ANY reason.  I only hope that people that are like me, in my situation, will see the value of your program.  Rich or poor, successful or not, everyone… and I do mean everyone… will benefit from your program.  I feel that this program will put me LIGHT YEARS ahead of where I am and even where I could have been at my best without you.

Please, if you know of anyone out there who is on the fence or who just doesn’t understand the impact your JV mentoring program can have on his or her life, I beg you to send them my way.  If I can just talk one person into joining your program, I feel that each person can literally touch and improve countless other lives.  That way, I make impact, as does the people I can talk into joining your program.  I have no qualms in talking to anyone and everyone about your program… you’re not selling a service… you’re offering a really way to truly change their lives.  I urge you, please, to put me in contact with anyone who is worried about your program.  This is a life-changing opportunity.  I know that I sound over-the-top about all this and I know that you might think I’m just being kind, but Ken, I can’t tell you enough how sincere and honest I’m being about all this.  Your program is incredible and you should be charging much more for it.  But I am very happy that it is affordable enough that anyone, including unemployed-and-in-debt me, can afford it.  If anyone is hesitant, make sure that they know that they can surely make back the monthly price each month just by using one or two of the principles learned in your program.

Also, please do highlight that anyone getting your program should get into, at the very, very least, the intermediate level.  The lowest level is great… but the intermediate level is where all the special magic happens.  The lower level giving us general advice is great… but I love the fact that I can work and interface on a regular basis with business gurus about MY specific projects and questions. I love that it’s not just some canned presentation or a binder of CDs, but that I have very successful people here to help me with every step along the way.  Never ever have I ever been in such a program.  With all sincerity, anyone going to college should quit, save all that money for the future, spend a tiny, tiny fraction of it for your program, and then cut all the corners and beat all their fellow students in being successful.  I learned more practical and useful business lessons this past week that I did from four years of college.

Changing the Action Plan for Your Business in Tough Economic Times

Tough economic times aren’t real until they impact you personally, but when they do … watch out!

It was clear after the Impact Event, that many of my friends aren’t feeling the pinch at all while others are experiencing intense pain that first stuns, then cripples and HOPEFULLY eventually moves them into massive action all the way to completion.

If they don’t get through the stages, they die an economic and many times very personal death.

So what are the stages of change?

What’s It Going To Take For You To Change?

Lots of people have heard of the five stages of grief, but did you know there are five stages of change?

Psychologists Carlo DiClemente, PhD, and James O. Prochaska, PhD, identified five stages of change, in a study on smoking habits. The stages that they identified include precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance.

Guess what! The same stages are involved when you try to move your impact to the next level.

In precontemplation you aren’t even thinking about changing so let’s ignore that stage for now.

Once you get to the contemplation stage,  you are most likely to respond to feedback and education as sources of information about growing your impact.  Then in the preparation stage you commit yourself to changing and seeking a plan of action.

If you are in the action or maintenance stages you are actively changing your behaviors and environments.

That’s where the researchers found that social reinforcers were most important.

Then there are the relapsers who cycle back into earlier stages.  Yes, it’s true we DON’T always move forward in a straight line climb to the top!

So where are you and what can you do to really change the results of your business, your actions and your life?

  1. If you are unaware. Wake up! Start reading, looking and learning.
  2. If you are contemplating making a change, continue your education and start moving into action. Meet people who are doing what you are doing and start with a first step.
  3. If you are taking action.  Keep it going! Small steps that are COMPLETED make a huge difference at this stage!Also remember the importance of social reinforcers to your success.  Everyone needs support.  That’s why live events like jvAlert Live are so important to your success!
  4. If you are actively moving and taking massive action all the way to completion, this reinforcement becomes even more important, so that you don’t lose the momentum that you have built up.  It’s easy to be distracted or discouraged, so use other people to keep you on track and moving forward at full speed. Other people can be INSPIRING!
  5. If you backslide, regroup and start where you are.  Don’t get discouraged when you fall back a stage.  It’s a natural part of the growth curves that we all face. Perspective can be a very useful thing, so look around you and discover who else has experienced what you are going through right now.

If things aren’t working out for you now, then NOW is the time for change.

Things aren’t going to get any better any earlier than today and the sooner you start the sooner the payoff comes.

Standing up and preaching about other people making changes is easy, but actually doing it is another thing.

Most of us ALREADY know what we need to do!

We just aren’t doing it.

Six Steps to Success In Tough Economic Times

  • Consolidate
  • Focus
  • Innovate
  • Expand
  • Make Offers
  • Market Actively

Let’s take them one by one.  I’ll use my own business as an example to get your ideas flowing …

Step One: Consolidate

When times get tough, there is no room for dead wood.

Time is short.  Money is short and you can’t waste either on things that aren’t producing solid results.

In the boom times, it’s easy to waste time and money and it really doesn’t matter all that much.  As long as your needs are being met it’s not that big a deal to waste a little time and money because there is plenty to go around.  But, when times are tough, you need to focus on activities that produce quickly with the least amount of time and money investment.

That means cutting loose projects that are eating resources and not producing results.

So …

It’s time to consolidate my server operations and high speed lines.

I have 11 servers in my basement with a T-1 that’s costing me about $1,100.00 a month just for the line.

My basement data center is a legacy of all of the projects that I’ve created over the years and most of it is outdated, poorly maintained and under utilized.

Bottom-line, a bunch of money that is going out without results.

It’s been too much effort in the past to make the changes to move everything off site and into managed servers in state-of-the-art new data centers, but NOW is the time to do it.

Every month, I lose money by not doing it, so investing money in tough times to get it done makes sense.

Over the next month or two, I will be moving all of my servers off-site, closing some websites and programs and consolidating others.

If it’s not working …. It’s gone …

because I clearly need to …

Step Two: Focus

If things are going well, feel free to try ANYTHING and EVERYTHING, but when the going gets rough, it’s time to focus on your key strengths and key projects.

We are all good at doing many things and most of us THINK we are great multi-taskers, but those can both be handicaps when money gets tight.

In the past, I’ve built world-class software systems, launched membership sites into the top 2,000 sites on the Internet, written a best-selling book and that’s all well and good, but if I want to succeed NOW then right now I need to focus on the key skills that can produce quickly with a high probability of success.

And …  I need to just focus on a few key projects.

How many unfinished projects do you have?

If you are anything like me it’s in the dozens if not hundreds.

For each project that you add to the pile, you lose focus and immediate CASH FLOW.

Let’s say a project takes 30 days to complete and start generating money and let’s assume that there is ZERO time lost by running three projects at once. (Not true, but some people are convinced that they can run three projects as quickly and effeciently as one.)

That means that if you do one project, complete it and generate cash in 30 days then you have …

Cash in 30 days.

Yes!

Now try starting three projects, complete them all in 90 days then you have to …

Wait 90 days before you have any cash.

If you do them serially you have cash in 30 days, double that in 60 days, triple in 90 days.

So … FOCUS!
